I am currently enjoying not having closed out my 2024 hledger file.
Let me explain a little. As mentioned in previous postings, I don’t close out the end of a calendar year shortly after the new year begins. Why? First, I am not running a business, so there is no need to. Second, since I enter transactions by hand, normally using iadd, it’s very helpful to have the previous transactions in the same file as it speeds my data entry.
In case you are not aware how this works, when I enter a payee in iadd, I get the default values of the last transaction with this payee. For example, if I buy gas at my usual gas station, I don’t have to remember the spending categories. Instead, they are there by default, and I can just hit the enter key to accept them for the new transaction.
Sometime this summer I will likely close out 2024. But I am still finding an occasional transaction that I had in 2024 but was new for 2025. In short, for the moment I am still happy not having closed out 2024.
