Still haven’t closed out 2024

Some months ago I thought that I would have closed out 2024 by now.

However, I keep seeing advantages to delaying my closing out of the prior year. For example, as I write this we are traveling in another state. We purchased some gas at a Road Ranger, which doesn’t exist in our area. When I used iadd to, well, add the transaction, I needed to type only “roa” before I was prompted with the complete name. Turns out we had purchased from the same company last year on a previous trip to this area. So by virtue of not having closed out the prior year, iadd could use the previous year’s transaction to prompt for the current one. I find it a nice feeling when I can add a transaction lickety-split.

As a result, my current plan is to close out 2024 sometime in early 2026. However, I need to come up with a better naming scheme for my hledger data files. Currently, my working file is named 2024.hledger. However, that is a misnomer as it has both 2024 and 2025 data. Perhaps when I close out 2024, I will name the file being closed as 2024.hledger, and the file being opened as current.hledger.

Then a year or so from now it will be time to close out my current.hledger file, which will have 2025 and 2026 data. The closed file will be named 2025.hledger and the opened file will retain the current.hledger moniker.
