A water cut leads to some thinking about plaintext accounting

We had no water for eight hours one day last week at our house. The local authorities did a proper job of letting us know about this in advance. So the day before, I prepared by filling up bottles and other containers to use during the outage.

While the containers of water definitely made it easier during the day that there was no running water, I couldn’t help but marvel what a luxury running water is.

And often it’s not that expensive. Precisely, where we live, it’s USD 0.00454 per gallon. At that rate, you could pay one penny for 2 gallons (= almost 8 liters), and you would be owed change on the one cent.

This got me thinking of what a great value running water is for me. It’s tremendously useful, and the cost is so low.

What are other spending categories of low cost but great benefit? It’s worth looking through a spending report to see what others can be identified.

It’s probably healthy, mentally and emotionally, to think about the things of great value in your life, no matter if the actual cost is great or small.

Yes, use hledger or a similar tool to focus on your large expenses, but also identify the things of great value in your life — whether you pay much or little for them.
