I use Emacs with my hledger data files. And if I am working on an hledger file, Emacs is in ledger mode, which has a number of useful features.
One of these handy features is the color coding. Specifically, there are different colors for
dates
descriptions
account names
currency symbols and amounts
Not only that, but the colors of the categories and amounts change when you mark a line as reconciled.
All this color coding helps your eye distinguish the various parts of your transactions more easily than if there were no color differences. It’s an ease of use feature, so it’s a nice plus.
A quick note:, if you are not sure what the basic parts of an hledger transaction are, see this previous blog posting: https://hledgerfan.com/beginners-corner-a-basic-hledger-transaction/.
