You can track many things in hledger besides time and money. Basically, if you can count it, you can probably track it in hledger or similar accounting program.
It occurred to me that it could be useful to track my calorie intake. If so, how would I go about that?
One approach would be to think of my body earning calories from food. For example, I eat a hamburger, and my body gains 500 (or however many) calories.
In plain text accounting format, that could be expressed as:
2025-11-06 lunch hamburger cal -500 me cal 500
The calories from the hamburger is expressed as a negative number, similar to income received is a negative number in hledger.
The final line of the transaction lists “me” as the recipient, and this shows the 500 calories that I received as a positive number. It may not be so positive for me to receive these calories, but that’s another story.
I am sure that there are other approaches to using an accounting system to track calorie intake, but it was fun to think of this one way of “earning” calories from food.
