The hledger book of the month is Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning, by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, and Mark A. McDaniel.
What does this book have to do with hledger? Well, sometimes it is useful to memorize certain hledger commands and their options.
Yes, there are times when you can just look up something. And there are other times when you can repeat a command — without having to remember it — on the command line by using your command history.
However, there are other times when you will be a more proficient user of hledger if you have memorized certain commands and command options. And if you need to learn something, it makes sense to make the best use of your time doing so.
But we all know how to learn something, right? Just read and reread.
Not so, according to the authors and other researchers in the field. It turns out that reading and rereading can give us the appearance of learning. However, this is a case where appearance does not equal reality. (And the theme of appearance vs. reality reminds me of one important reason that I use hledger. I want to know what is really happening with my finances as opposed to what is appearing to happen.)
In short, if you are serious about learning, you want to know the contents of this book. Want another source with good information about the same topic? Try https://www.learningscientists.org/.
