“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing” is a quote attributed to Stephen Covey. It speaks to a lot of human nature in that it’s so easy to lose our focus on what’s important. We get bored with what we are doing and add new things that sometimes choke out an important task.
This idea applies to personal finance. Therefore, it can be worthwhile doing an audit, using the following questions:
- What is the main reason that I am keeping track of my income and expenses?
- How sure am I of the above answer?
- What would my life look like if I consistently kept the main thing the main thing in terms of my finances?
- What helps me in maintaining my focus on the main thing?
- What is getting in the way of keeping my focus?
- How can I arrange my life so that I add the things that help my focus and subtract those that work against it?
