Research has shown that, in regards to happiness, experiences are more valuable than material items. So, how could you use hledger, or similar software, to track your spending on experiences?
One way would be to use tags. If you are not familiar with hledger tags, I wrote a tutorial that you can find at https://hledger.org/tags-tutorial.html.
Just to show an example of a transaction tagged as an experience, it could be:
2025-01-09 National Park Admission ; experience:
Expenses:Entertainment $8.00
Liabilities:AcmeCreditCard
A couple of notes are perhaps in order. First, it is unlikely that all your experiences will have a financial cost. To use the above example, some parks are free to visit, so there would be no recorded cost. Thus, you can track all your financial transactions that involve experiences, but not all experiences will have a financial cost.
Another note is that experiences are generally perceived as happier after the event. At the time, they may not be associated with happiness. Later, however, our memories are more positive.
In any case, hledger tags are one way to track your spending on experiences. And I hope that later you will have many fond memories of your experiences.
